Working in OT

Julia Brown
Community Occupational Therapist for Community Mental Health Team
BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy, University of Derby
Castleberg Hospital, Settle

Julia works in a multi-disciplinary community team supporting older people to live in the community with enduring mental health problems. Her team also runs the Memory Service which involves carrying out cognitive and functional assessments for diagnostic appointments and possible medication.

"On a normal day I spend the first hour or two in the office doing paperwork, contacting GPs, client's relatives and referring clients to voluntary or public sector services," says Julia. "I then drive around the beautiful Yorkshire Dales visiting clients at home to carry out assessments, conduct anxiety management, and offer support in daily living."

The position she holds gives her the opportunity to experience different areas of the profession.

"Currently I'm on a band 5 development scheme which lets me rotate to my hearts content!" says Julia. "In the future I'd like to gain a band 6 permanent post in Older Peoples Mental Health in Craven."

Julie says being part of an organisation like the NHS gives you plenty of opportunity to develop, with opportunity for training and career progression. Her working hours are flexible and her weekends free, and she also says it's really motivating to know that if you continue improving you will be rewarded with increased pay.

She also thinks being part of NHS Yorkshire and Humber is great and it's the straight talking, matter of fact Yorkshire folk that really make a difference to her working day!

"I love the banter!" says Julia, "you really can't find a better community to be part of then a Yorkshire one!"

"I really love living and working in Yorkshire as you get the best of both worlds. I live in the dales but you can be sure wherever you are in the region you're only a stones throw from city, coast or countryside. I get to live a real country life in beautiful surroundings and I'm still only a 20 minute train ride from Leeds city centre!"
