Employer: University of Leeds

Leeds is one of Britain's largest and most popular universities with more than thirty-three thousand students and just under 7,500 staff, including four thousand academic and academic-related staff.

The University has departments in all major disciplines and more than fifty interdisciplinary centres. Trinity and All Saints College and the College of Ripon and York are affiliated to the University. The University is also associated with Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital, which together make up the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Job details: School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering Theory and Simulation of Germanium-based Quantum Cascade Lasers.

This post is part of a multi-university project funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The work will involve the development of theory and simulation methods for use in the design of Ge/SiGe quantum cascade lasers which will be fabricated and characterised by the experimental team within this project.

The theoretical approaches required will include quantum transport simulation using density matrix calculations, to be supported by semi-classical transport modelling using rate equation and self-consistent energy balance methods. Thermal modelling based on commercial or pre-existing software will also be required.

Overall the work will involve extensive software development, but combined with use and, where appropriate, expansion, of pre-existing codes, along with application of these tools to device design and optimisation problems, and interpretation of experimental data.
