Case study

James Rand

James Rand studied History at the University of Sheffield and found both his jobs after graduation through Graduates Yorkshire's online service.

"This doesn't mean I only looked on the Graduates Yorkshire site," says James. "In fact I spent hours scouring many of the national online websites, but I've found Graduates Yorkshire to have more interesting jobs that are presented in an accessible way."

James's first role was as an Assistant Publisher with Emerald Group in August 2006. In 2008 he left Emerald to join Young Enterprise Yorkshire and Humber as a Development Manager.

"My role is really exciting, working for an educational charity delivering enterprise activities to schools across the region. The job involves recruiting business professionals to volunteer their time by going into schools, building relationships with schools and businesses in the area, and delivering classroom activities to school students."

James advices today's graduates to look for jobs that will develop you as an individual.

"I had no idea what job I wanted to do when I left university but all the jobs I have done so far have helped me develop a range of skills that I can transfer to future jobs.

"Also, try and find something that you are passionate about. If you're not sure what that is then why not find a job where you will have a positive impact on someone, somewhere? It really helped me to be more motivated and engaged in my work."
