Make yourself Hireable
Last updated 2-Sep-10 10:13

So now the dust has settled after results day, we bet most of you are wondering where do I go from here. Our CEO Martin Edmondson gives you a clear answer -
‘Make yourself hireable'
However, making yourself hireable does not consist of one silver bullet; it is about a series of small actions that cumulatively will increase your traction in the job market. One way of viewing this is to divide the process into 3 stages:
1 - Self awareness:
Understand what is right for your next move. Seek advice from those around you who you trust, be it teachers, tutors parents or friends. Carry out some quality research into your next options, whether they are in education or work.
2 - Search and source:
Once you have a focus for what you want next, use the tools around you to access that course or career. If you have identified a certain industry you could network online and offline to build your industry awareness, and get to know useful contacts in that field. You should also understand and effectively use job boards, agencies and careers services to their full potential.
3 - Selection:
Put yourself in a position where people will want to pick you in a selection process. Have a well written, spell-checked CV, write focused applications, practice your interview techniques, get work experience, make yourself presentable, and finally get your body-clock used to that all important 9-5 schedule.
Whilst those of you finishing these qualifications are entering a tough and competitive job market, remember that there are converse positive stories that counterbalance or even outweigh the negative ones. There are thousands of graduates getting graduate jobs and internships, there are thousands of a level students getting into Universities here and abroad, and there are thousands of GCSE students moving onto A levels or going into the workplace through apprenticeships. Stay positive, and make yourself hireable!

Nice article. Wish we were given some of this kind of preparation from our University courses!
We've also written a brief article for new designers on things to consider when applying for a job. You can view it here: http://www.bml-creative.co.uk/2010/09/a-design-agencys-guide-to-getting-your-first-design-job/ hopefully it might just help someone to get moving in the right directions.
Thanks for posting.
