Services and links
Voluntary & Charity
Provision of Client Services
This sector covers a variety of organisations which offer a wide range of services, sometimes undertaking contracted work from local authorities and other agencies. Service-provision may include: support groups; research; advocacy; helplines; refuge centres; meals-on-wheels delivery; day care services; and other community-based support roles. They may also assist in the development of other charities in the area (e.g. National Council for Voluntary Organisations and Councils for Voluntary Services).
Communtiy Workers often help local community groups develop their organisation, providing assistance in aspects like budget management.
Obviously, there may be a greater need for some types of organisations in different areas within the region (e.g. care centres for the elderly in large cities or home visiting for those in isolated rural areas).
Some organisations in the links section may be national charities and agencies with branches and services within the region (e.g. WRVS), while others may be particular to the area (e.g. Sheffield Community Transport). The ones listed are only given as examples of the types of charities involved in this sector - there are many more listed on websites like http://www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/
Remember, although there may not be current, paid opportunities with a particular charity you can gain valuable experience as a volunteer, which can be necessary for a permanent paid position.
