Care Work
Care workers look after the personal needs of those who have difficulties caring for themselves. They provide practical support predominantly within the social, community and health care sectors. Working environments are typically people's own homes and residential homes. Client groups include the elderly, children, people with disabilities and families.
Vacancies in this area of work may be voluntary or be relatively low paid, but could offer opportunities to gain the necessary experience required for related careers (e.g. nursing, etc.). There is also some flexibility in this field, with part-time and shift work opportunities.
Vacancies for Support Workers may also be found in this sector. These may carry out the same tasks as a Care Worker, but equally may require more of an organising element within their role. As a result, these posts may command slightly higher pay depending on the duties involved.
Health care workers may have the opportunity to obtain an NVQ in care while working and a framework of qualifications is currently being developed for those who wish to advance within the sector.
Local authorities, NHS trusts, voluntary organisations, and private health and social care companies and agencies are typical employers. Vacancies may be advertised through local authority and other organisations' websites, bulletins and local press.
