Campaigning

Campaigners can work for a wide variety of organisations including charities, political parties, public affairs companies and special interest groups, including professional organisations. Their role includes lobbying MPs and other decision makers for policy changes, planning and co-ordinating media campaigns, organising events and managing campaign budgets. They may scrutinise current and proposed legislation to safeguard the interests of their client group, and prepare newsletters or more in-depth documents to highlight current issues or to inform new policy.

Campaigners need to be excellent communicators who can raise the profile of the organisation and its clients. Those working for public affairs companies will help other organisations such as charities or trade groups target the appropriate policy makers and communicate their views.

Vacancies do occur in Yorkshire and Humber, although the vast majority of opportunities will be in the regional cities such as Leeds. Some campaigners may be based in regional offices whilst others will be based at an organisation's headquarters. A small number of specialist public affairs companies exist in the region. There is an extensive list of public affairs websites for charities and other organisations available at Epolitix. The Directory of Political Lobbying published by Politico, includes a company by company guide to Britain's leading parliamentary consultancies and a directory of EU lobbying companies.

The Charity Commission has an on-line register of charities that can be searched by charity name, location, or type of work. Contact details for the top 500 charities in terms of income, expenditure and funds can be located via the Charitiesdirect.com website. Details of regionally based charities and voluntary organisations may also be obtained from local Councils for Voluntary Services (CVS) throughout the region. Contact details for regional CVS offices can be found through the National Association of Councils for Voluntary Service (NACVS) website.
