Supply Chain
A big growth area within the Transport and Logistics sector is the employment of Supply Chain Managers within manufacturing and retailing companies. Within the Yorkshire and Humber region there are companies such as Nestle, ASDA, Morrisons and the Arcadia Group with their own in-house distribution operations.
Within the Supply Chain network, warehousing is a key function. Stocks vary from raw materials to finished goods which need to be kept in the right conditions and dispatched in the precise quantities at exactly the right time, via the most efficient route.
The main motorway networks within the Yorkshire region provide an ideal location for large distribution centres. Companies such as B&Q, IKEA, Poundstretcher, ASDA, Tesco and Next have built major depots in the area to take advantage of this.
The supply chain is a core part of a lot of businesses and in large companies it can be a multi-million pound operation.
If you're interested in working in the industry, you'll need to be a great team player and have strong communication skills as your likely to be working with people across the organisation to ensure the supply chain is running smoothly. The role can involve the purchasing of raw materials, researching the best suppliers, business planning and forecasting and co-ordinating production and distribution of goods.
The area is open to most graduates although a technical or business degree can be an advantage.
