Within Yorkshire there are four police forces and four probation services: North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Humberside. Each police force handles its own recruitment of police officers and civilian staff. Vacancies are usually advertised on force websites and may also be advertised in local press. You can contact forces directly for application details.

The National Probation Service employs all probation officers in England and Wales. The Yorkshire and Humberside Consortium oversees the recruitment and training of trainee probation officers to the four services in the region. Recruitment takes place each spring, March-April, when vacancies are advertised in both local and national press such as The Guardian. Opportunities for police and probation officers may also arise in Youth Offending Teams. The recent announcement that the Prison and Probation Services are to work together as a new National Offender Management Service may mean that recruitment and training to both services will change in the future.

The Prison Service recruits graduates annually to its Intensive Development Scheme, which involves training to enter management grades. Recruitment is co-ordinated by 20 Units and usually takes place each autumn. Other recruitment opportunities, such as Prison Officer, Psychologist and administrative grades are advertised on the Prison Office website and in the local press.

Administrative opportunities may arise within the Crown Prosecution Service, which has headquarters in York and the Court Service.
