Sports, leisure and recreation facilities are provided for Yorkshire residents in both urban and rural areas. Yorkshire also provides for holidaying visitors and those who come to the region in search of outdoor pursuits and extreme sports on the edge of the edge of the Peak District.

The English Institute of Sport in Sheffield along with its facilities built for the World Student Games added to other South Yorkshire based initiatives has raised the profile of the region as a Sporting Centre of Excellence.

A range of postgraduate sports and leisure degrees are provided within the region. Skills gained may be specialist, such as through Sports and Exercise Science, or may provide a range of transferable skills appropriate to different sectors and environments, such as Sport or Leisure Management.

Delivery of sport and leisure services in the context of performance, lifestyle and recreation requires administrators, developers, consultants, co-ordinators, managers, performers, teachers, trainers and instructors. Popular roles for graduates in the area include sport development officers, leisure and recreation management, lifestyle consultant, personal fitness trainers, gym instructor and sports coaching.

A wide range of employers deliver this vast and diverse range of services including local authorities, private companies, clubs, hotels, health and fitness clubs, schools, charitable trusts, activity centres, sports clubs and sports councils. Increasingly partnerships with Health and Education services are supporting healthy lifestyle initiatives.

There are few specific graduate entry schemes in this sector and if your looking to work in the sector some proven interest in the industry in which you want to work and some good work experience on your CV is a must. Good ways to gain experience including through school placements, helping out with youth groups, after school and holiday clubs and local charities. Being involved in University societies such as sporting clubs can also look good on your CV.

Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM)

The Institute exists to advance and promote public health for the benefit of the public in particular through the provision of education, training and advancing medical and other sciences and technologies and by encouraging active participation in sport and other recreational activities.

The Institute for Sport, Parks and Leisure (ISPAL)

ISPAL is the professional membership body for a fast growing, buoyant industry.  It has been formed from merging ILAM (The Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management) and NASD (The National Association of Sports Development).  It represents the interests of those working across all sectors and specialisms of leisure and sport.

Sport England

Sport England is an organisation committed to creating opportunities for people to start in sport, stay in sport and succeed in sport. They provide the strategic lead for sport in England and are responsible for delivering the Government's sporting objectives.

The British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES)

BASES stands for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. With over 3,000 members, BASES is the UK professional body for all those with an interest in the science of sport and exercise.  Sport and Exercise Science is the application of scientific principles to the promotion, maintenance and enhancement of sport and exercise related behaviours.

The Fitness Industry Association is a trade body promoting excellence and best practice within the health and fitness sector.

English Institute of Sport

Based in Sheffield, the English Institute of Sport is a nationwide network of world class support services, designed to foster the talents of elite athletes.  Services are offered from nine regional multi-sport hub sites and an evolving network of satellite centres.  It includes the World Snooker Academy where many of the up and coming snooker players train.
