Legal Executives
Legal executives work in firms of solicitors, local authorities and the Civil Service. The work is similar to the work of a solicitor but you will usually specialise in one aspect of the law such as probate, criminal law, family law or conveyance.
Entry into law as a Legal Executive is open to graduates from all subjects but you will need to show a proven interest in working in the area, be willing to undergo further formal training and have good all round skills in written and verbal communication. Working as a legal secretary can be the first step towards finding a job as a trainee legal executive and making speculative applications to local firms can be a good way to gain your first position.
The professional body is the Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX). It is possible to qualify as a solicitor after completing the ILEX Membership Examinations and become a Fellow after five years' experience.
