Over half the FTSE 100 companies plan to outsource IT over the next few years and this is expected to increase the number of positions available in IT consultancy. The externalisation of other functions such as HR or accountancy is also predicted in a move to 'Business Process Engineering' which could create new alliances between conventional IT providers and auditing firms.

One of the most common roles in IT for graduates from a variety of disciplines is consultancy. Professional services firms such as Accenture, PWC, IBM and Logica provide consultancy on a national and international basis. Some such as IBM will build both the hardware and software, others such as Accenture will focus on providing software and management consultancy services.

For management consultancy roles, many companies will recruit from any degree discipline although a knowledge and interest in IT is preferred. A high level of interpersonal skills is paramount. Work is often project-based and short-term and a willingness to travel is required. Some organisations do require students to have an IT or IT related degree.

There are a variety of IT and management consultancies with offices in the Yorkshire region eg Synetgra - IT consultancy in Leeds, although many of the larger organisations are based outside the region.

Many consultants, after gaining specialist skills, decide to become self-employed (see the section on Self Employment for more information). It is only worth considering if you can offer specialist skills in shortage areas. A search of www.yell.co.uk brings over 70 computer consultants in the Yorkshire region - many of these will be small or medium sized companies, or individuals contracting out their services.
