Software Engineering
Software Engineering is a vital and growing IT occupational group, and there is still a shortage of those offering skills in application development tools, database software, application development standards, techniques and methods and information modelling tools. However, despite the skills shortage, entry into the profession is competitive.
A key role of a Software Engineer is to 'bolt together' existing software products by getting incompatible platforms to work together. This requires continual updating of your knowledge of software packages and programming languages and keeping abreast of current trends. Part-time, distance or open learning courses are available at many centres in the region.
The range of sectors in which a software engineer (also commonly known as computer programmers and software developers) might work is very wide, as they are called upon to support IT systems across many end-user business areas.
Yorkshire Forward identified five particular 'clusters' of industry which are very strong within the region and these are assisted with funding and innovation grants. The 'clusters' include Digital and ICT as well as Advanced Engineering and Metals, Bioscience, Chemicals and Food and Drink.
All of these industries are likely to employ Software Engineers, as do the many and varied organisations operating in the strong commercial and financial sectors in the region and, of course, the public sector.
Large companies tend to employ their own software developers; whilst small and medium sized companies may contract out their requirements. As an example, a search on yell.co.uk identifies more than 60 computer software development companies based in Yorkshire.
Self-employment amongst Software Engineers is higher than the average for the IT sector.
