According to the DTI, 86% of business in Yorkshire are connected to the internet, and 22% are trading online. The term 'connected' applies if a company has a website and/or uses email substantially; the term 'trading online' means the organisation uses the internet for both ordering and paying for goods and services. These figures are above the national average, showing a healthy requirement in the region for staff with experience or skills in web technologies and e-commerce.

The UK e-internet directory for internet related products and services has a geographical index giving information on a wide range of companies in the region involved in internet business, including a comprehensive list of independent web designers. You can search on organisations located in each of the Yorkshire sub-regions. In addition, a search of any of the large job sites for opportunities in Yorkshire will produce a healthy list of organisations recruiting in this area, including many in the public sector.

The most sought after IT people are those with Java, C++, telecoms and Wap knowledge. High-level database skills such as Unix and Linux are also much in demand. There are many opportunities within the region to develop your skills in these areas including, for example, accredited evening courses in a wide range of web technologies.

A new training initiative is the Graduate Professional Development Award which is run by e-skills UK, in collaboration with employers and educators. You can choose to specialise in internet services delivery. For this region, the course is run by Leeds Metropolitan University.
