Business management can be a varied role and job responsibilities vary from organisation to organisation dependent on the size and nature of the business. As a business manager you're likely to be dealing with all members of the organisation so a good knowledge of business practice is essential and you may spend time with different departments in the business during your induction to get a better idea of what they do.

Although a big part of your role is likely to involve leadership and project management you could also find yourself working on or closely with colleagues in finance, marketing, operations, sales and customer service.

Many large graduate recruiters offer fast tracked business management schemes which often involve rotation around the company to experience different departments and the opportunity to specialise in an area of the company that interests you. These schemes often offer rapid career progression and can be highly competitive. ASDA, HBOS and Enterprise Rent a Car all operate similar graduate schemes and leadership programmes in the region.

If you're looking to work in business management you will need to possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, be able to work with a variety of people throughout the company and be a great team player.

Schemes normally except graduates from all degrees but generally ask for good all rounders who possess strong written and planning skills and have proven leadership and teamwork skills.

As jobs in this area, especially with larger graduate schemes, can be competitive you will need to make sure you have plenty of added extras on your CV to help it stand out in the crowd. Previous work experience in a customer facing or business environment is essential and an example of leadership or teamwork within a sports team or society looks great too.
