Broadcasting

There are a number of opportunities to get into broadcasting in Yorkshire. The BBC has 4 radio stations throughout the region and Yorkshire Television calls Leeds its home. There are also twenty other commercial radio stations based throughout Yorkshire.

Finding work in broadcasting can be difficult with opportunities scarce and competition fierce. The need to set yourself apart and stand out from the crowd is essential. Working for your University Radio Station is a great way to learn about everything from presenting to producing and also shows potential employers you have taken an active interest in the industry. You may also find opportunities in hospitals and on local and community radio and many larger stations do offer work experience schemes - although you're more likely to find yourself making the tea than spinning the discs.

The BBC are one of the few employers who offer entry at a graduate level and they also offer Work Experience opportunities that you can apply for online via the BBC website.

There are also a large number of independent broadcast, film and video production companies in Yorkshire. They do tend to be small and jobs are rarely advertised. Contacting companies personally or sending out a CV and a good covering letter may show a potential employer that you are serious about getting into the industry and means your name might be on their desks when a job arises.
