Museums and Art Galleries
There are over 200 museums in Yorkshire. 8 of these are nationally funded museums including the National Railway Museum in York and the National Coal Mining Museum for England in Wakefield.
Other landmark museums in the region include The National Media Museum in Bradford for all things television, photography, film, radio and the web complete with a 5 storey IMAX cinema screen. The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, opened in 1996, was purpose built to house the Royal Armouries' national collection of arms and armour. Magna in Rotherham, housed in an old steelworks, charts the history of steel making in South Yorkshire while integrating it with hands-on science learning, while the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield often hosts exhibitions from London.
Visits to museums and art galleries account for approximately 30% of all visits to attractions in Yorkshire and visitors to attractions in the larger cities of Leeds, Bradford and York have remained reasonably consistent, in contrast to the heritage sector as a whole, which has seen falling visitor numbers to rural venues.
The regions museums are popular with school parties and the national museums and other larger museums in the region have dedicated education departments which provide services to schools and other groups and often provide good opportunities for graduate employment.
Some university museum courses include a museum education module which can be studied separately to gain some experience in the field and many of the larger galleries or museums have developed in-house training programmes for educators. The 'Engage' website listed below has a database of training opportunities.
Museum management is often open to graduates who have studied any discipline but a keen interest in the type of museum you are looking to work is often a must. Many institutions such as Sheffield Hallam offer modules on Art's Management which can run alongside degrees in various disciplines such as the Arts, Media and Business.
