Auctioneering

Working as an auctioneer or as a valuer you could find yourself involved in the sale of items ranging from property and cars, to livestock and fine arts.

Valuers advise clients on all aspects of the valuation of commercial and residential property and land for purposes such as sale, loans, inclusion in company accounts or compensation claims. The main part of the work is to visit land and property to find out how much it is worth, and then prepare detailed reports for customers and market them ready for auction.

Agricultural auctioneers are responsible for auctioning livestock, land, machinery and buildings and are usually employed by firms of rural practice surveyors or agricultural valuers.

There are almost 80 auctioneers and valuers in Yorkshire & Humber, varying in size and the types of items that they handle (such as property, machinery, cars and antiques). The majority are in West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire with a large number based in Harrogate and the majority of agricultural and livestock auctioneers also being concentrated in North Yorkshire.

To become an auctioneer you would generally need a relevant degree (such as surveying, building or property management) or a qualification from a professional body such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). You would then obtain auctioneering training on the job.
