Environment & Sustainability
One-fifth of Yorkshire and Humber is rural, meaning that there are more than 1 million people living in rural communities, supporting 30,000 businesses contributing £6 billion to the regional economy. Recent years have seen large changes to the agricutural sector, and in farming practices, but despite the difficulties, events such as the Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate which attracts in excess of 100,000 visitors, illustrate the importance of this sector particularly in North and West Yorkshire.
Yorkshire Forward has agreed a strategic regional rural agenda to help support rural economic development and growth in Yorkshire. Details of their Rural Renaissance project can be found below.
Environment is one of the most recent additions to Yorkshire Forward's seven clusters. It focuses on low carbon energy and energy management; water treatment and technologies; recyclate manufacture; and environmental monitoring and instrumentation. Yorkshire and Humber has approximately 1,500 companies involved both directly and indirectly with the environmental technologies cluster, generating £3.6 billion for the region's economy.
