Culture & Art
The cultural sector within Yorkshire encompasses the arts, creative industries, education, film, heritage, libraries, local government, media, museums and sport. In their vision for culture in the region, Yorkshire Culture (YC) has pledged to ensure that 'The distinctive, diverse, world class culture of Yorkshire and the Humber holds its rightful place in Britain, Europe and the world.'
Yorkshire's history spans over 2,000 years and the region has been witness to key events in national history, including Roman and Viking invasions, key battles, the Industrial Revolution and the foundation of Methodism. Yorkshire is home to many award-winning museums and heritage centres that deal with a range of historical eras and subject areas and house some of the most important collections in the world. The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds houses 3,000 years of history through over 8,000 exhibits.
Leeds' West Yorkshire Playhouse built in 1998 has rapidly established a reputation of one of the most exciting and forward-looking producing theatres in the country. Alongside production of its own shows the company works with other theatres, including the National Theatre on co-productions.
The development of Sheffield's cultural industries has been an important factor in its regeneration. The cultural industries quarter (CIQ) is home to many companies working on the interface between the performing and the visual arts. They also host the annual International Documentary Festival. Sheffield's complex of theatres is the largest outside London.
The Ferensway site in Hull which is currently being redeveloped will be home to Hull Truck Theatre and the Albermarle Music Centre.
Yorkshire plays host to a wide range of musical events from rock festivals to opera in the park. Many stately homes in the region stage musical events; Castle Howard has been host to a last night of the proms event. Leeds hosts the triennial Leeds International Pianoforte Competition. Once a year the National Centre for Early Music in York hosts the internationally renowned York Early Music Festival and the Beverley and East Riding Early Music Festival.
