Science & Technology

There are four broad groups of employers who provide opportunities for scientific work - Universities, Industry, NHS, and Government Laboratories. All of these are well represented in Yorkshire. They work in biosciences, chemical sciences and physical sciences. These are no longer clearly distinct disciplines: many scientists work at the interface between these sciences. Although this Science section attempts to classify opportunities along traditional lines, this distinction is increasingly artificial, and it's worth checking all sections, regardless of your discipline. You should also check the Health Section for further information on the NHS, a major source of scientific opportunities in the Region.

The Region has eight major universities, all of which offer scientific employment across a range of disciplines. Some of this may well involve collaboration between employment sectors. Universities traditionally undertook basic or 'Blue Skies' research, but a University scientist is just as likely to be working in collaboration with one of the other employment sectors. Universities are also becoming increasingly entrepreneurial. For example the White Rose Centre for Enterprise is based upon the reputation for successful enterprise enjoyed by the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. It aims to increase the entrepreneurial skills and competency of graduates, postgraduates and research staff, and to give encouragement and support to technology transfer, particularly via the formation of new companies.

Yorkshire Forward has designated one of its five clusters to Bioscience, in order to encourage development in this area. They are already working to enhance the cluster with specific projects including the creation, along with the University of York and City of York Council, of a bio-incubator - a 30,000 sq ft building with laboratory facilities - at York Science Park leading to 200 high tech jobs and 20 new businesses.

It is also worth remembering that science based organisations offer a range of opportunities outside the laboratory. The Science Sector of the Prospects website http://www.prospects.ac.uk/links/ScienceSB includes a survey of some options. A common example is Technical Sales. Here it may well be possible to work in the region even if the company's HQ is elsewhere, since large firms usually need a nationwide network of sales staff.
